“Seven Coats For Walter” was inspired by an old man I used to work for named Walter. I never met anyone like him. He was an eccentric of the highest degree. He was going through some major difficulties and sometimes he came across as quite insane. He was battling for his health and his moods fluctuated between despair and serenity. I did a lot of painting inside his house and he often had me re-paint the walls several times because he wanted a slightly lighter or darker shade of a certain color. It was pure insanity. Amidst the darkness there were moments when Walter seemed truly happy and the light shined through the clouds.

a different color, yellow changed from green to white

no one needs to know what he does till daylight
a cruel thorn grows, sticking in his side

disregards his neighbors, lives the way he wants to live
tears up their letters, gives the finger, shakes his fist

staring into space, lights a cigarette
the music plays, second coat’s still wet

once in awhile the sun lights up his face
laughing aloud the clouds begin to rain
once in awhile the sun smiles on his face
